3056
At The University of Tampa I took a Game Design and Development course – the first game design course ever offered at the university. Although this was really cool to be a part of, there was little information about how Unreal Engine worked. That being said, this was an extremely challenging course. I had an ambitious vision of the game I wanted to create– a multi-level game using multiple assets. I watched countless YouTube videos and spent months in the computer lab building, learning, fixing, and creating. I learned about level design, how to build an inventory, marketplace assets, loading screens, character integration, the game development pipeline, and much more. Not only did I learn all about Unreal Engine, but I also learned that I have an extreme passion for game development and design. The game I created was presented at The University of Tampa’s 65 years in the Making Visual Arts Exhibition from August 2021 to August 2022. It was displayed at the Ferman Center for the Arts Student Gallery for any student, visitor, or guest to watch.
Here are some elements I integrated inside my game:
- Fab marketplace asset integration
- Changed standard mannequin to third-person character
- Built an inventory system
- Interactive objects that trigger actions
- Starting screen and loading screen widgets
- Sound effects and various music
- Import FBX and animations
- And more
Story
The game’s story is about a scientist working in the year 3056. Her goal was to be able to be the first person to successfully create a working Time Machine. However, once she activated the machine, different pieces exploded into different time periods throughout history. It’s up to her to collect all of the pieces and to return to 3056 to see what went wrong.
